VANPOOLING
The ‘Riding Green’ Solution
Vanpools are the most cost effective mode of public transportation in the United States and the only mode more cost effective than buses. Vanpools reach more commuters in more areas and offer more destinations than any other type of Mass Transit currently available.
What is a vanpool?
Vanpools allow relatively small groups of 7 to 14 people to share a commute similar to a carpool, but on a larger scale with concurrent savings in fuel and vehicle operating costs.
The key concept is that people who live a significant distance from where they work share the ride from one or more common meeting locations with scheduled pick up times and travel together to a common destination or work center.
A number of programs exist to help lower the cost of that shared ride to the end user. These public transportation programs seek to reduce the number of cars on the road improving conditions and promoting environmental benefits. Commuters and employers utilize tax benefit available under 26 U.S. Code §132(f) Qualified Transportation Fringe Benefit allowances.
